Publishing a first book of poems is no small step. Some poets arrive at this inflection point via the traditional path of academic study, while others follow a more self-directed route. Regardless, assembling a collection and considering each poem not only as a lone expression, but as part of the greater whole, presents fresh challenges. It’s at this stage that an editor can be a helpful in stepping in to play the role of reader or audience. With a bit of distance from the act of composition, the editor tunes an ear and eye with the full symphony in mind, considering single poems as passages that work with and advance the overall effect.
