The generation of figures in this book is a response to an old soldier’s request that the Anglo-Saxon race create “a towering monument” in memory of a Cherokee woman’s act of compassion in 1838, and my own attempt to honor the memory of my own Cherokee ancestor whose unmarked grave compelled me to tackle some of my ignorance and write a book, obliged me to find the many small things that told me, taught me how Death lives, before taking form in this generation of figures. I gratefully acknowledge poet, Ryland Kelley, for his help in dramatizing the story of Lieutenant John G. Burnett who served in the Cherokee Removal in 1838-1839. The audio element in this book includes both a reading of the story Lieutenant Burnett’s told his children and grandchildren in 1890 and excerpts from my praise for Quatie–Song to the November Moon. Let the voice of the old soldier enliven the figures themselves and constitute a “monument” of sorts, for a Native American hero who will not be forgotten in our time.
